Unusual Business Practices of MV Goldy Seven Owner Raise Fraud Concerns

Fréttatíminn has obtained information about highly unusual business practices involving a man named Alexander Von Ripp, who presented himself as the owner of the cargo vessel MV Goldy Seven, moored at Dutch Harbor’s-Gravendeel BV, Griendweg 14, 3295 KV ‘s-Gravendeel, Netherlands. It was at this location that he invited representatives from an Icelandic company to meet him in person and sign a purchase agreement.

When Fréttatíminn sent several emails to Alexander, the responses received were limited to rude remarks and threats. He appeared to be concerned that media coverage of his dealings could be damaging to him. One such email sent to him included the following:

I have now received confirmation that you signed a binding purchase agreement without notice and promised payment for a vessel in the amount of 130,000 euros. You cheated everything from the beginning and could not even pay 5,000 euros in six months as confirmation. I have copies of all communications between you and the seller. Now you are a dealer in junk, useless steel like this ship MV Goldy Seven, you live in. Did you get it as a gift to destroy it? I reiterate previous requests for more photos (I hope you like them) and information from you, as I am working on several articles on your fraudulent activities. I hope those pictures are fine, but you can send more.

Seller’s Account of Dealings with Alexander Von Ripp

“Alexander invited us to a meeting regarding the purchase of our ship from Iceland, and we made a special trip to the Netherlands to meet him as requested. He welcomed us aboard the cargo ship, which had been docked for a long time due to repairs. The first thing we noticed were cobwebs in the windows and a general state of disrepair. It was obvious the ship had been idle for quite some time.

Alexander presented his passport, which we photographed—it had been issued in Bosnia. He also told us he had Vietnamese heritage. He assured us he was very honest and that he always stood by his word and any agreement he signed. As it turned out, this was a complete lie. Not a single promise he made was kept, and he appeared to view binding legal contracts as something he had no obligation to honor.

After price negotiations, we agreed on a purchase price of EUR 130,000. Alexander promised to pay in full via bank transfer once we had returned to Iceland. It was also agreed that he would pay EUR 5,000 upon signing the legal purchase agreement. Alexander claimed this was no problem and that he would personally deliver the EUR 5,000 to our hotel after dinner. We waited all evening, but he never arrived and made no contact.

Once we were back home, we sent him our bank details so he could transfer the EUR 5,000. He then claimed he never had any money to pay such a small amount. Over the next six months, we received a series of emails, calls, and messages—each with a new and different excuse. The situation began to resemble the type of scams one reads about online, such as so-called ‘Nigerian prince’ frauds.

The purchase agreement Alexander personally signed for EUR 130,000 was one he had no intention of honoring. His actions caused us considerable financial harm. We could have rented the ship out for EUR 10,000 per month, but because of the binding contract with Alexander Von Ripp, we were unable to lease it to another party. Our total loss from dealing with him amounts to EUR 80,000, and he has openly stated that he has no intention of compensating us for this amount.

We believe it is important to share our experience in order to warn other potential victims about engaging in any business dealings with Alexander Von Ripp.”

En það er sá staður sem hann boðaði fulltrúa fyrirtækis frá Íslandi til þess að undirrita kaupsamning við sig persónulega.

Fréttatíminn sendi nokkra tölvupósta til Alexander og fékk eingöngu dónaleg svör og hótanir frá honum til baka þar sem hann óttaðist að umfjöllun um viðskiptahætti sína gætu komið sér illa fyrir hann. Hér er t.d. einn póstur sem var sendur til hans:

Frásögn seljenda um samskipti við Alexander auk mynda af samskiptum

,,Alexander boðaði okkur á fund vegna kaupa á skipi okkar frá Íslandi og við gerðum okkur sérstaka ferð til Hollands til þess að verða við þeirri ósk hans. Hann bauð okkur um borð í fraktskipið sem hafði legið lengi í höfn vegna viðgerða og það fyrsta sem mætti okkur voru köngulóavefir í gluggum og skip þar sem allt var í drasli um borð. Skipið hafði augsýnilega legið þarna í mjög langan tíma.

Alexander framvísaði vegabréfi sínu sem ég á mynd af og er það gefið út í Bosníu og hann sagði okkur einnig að hann væri ættaður frá Víetnam. Hann sagðist vera mjög heiðarlegur og að allt sem hann segði myndi hann standa við sem og allir samningar sem hann undirritaði. Við áttum heldur betur eftir að sjá að það var allt eintóm lygi vegna þess að það stóðst ekki eitt einasta orð sem hann sagði og hann virðist líta á bindandi og löglegan kaupsamning sem eitthvað sem hann þurfi ekkert að standa við frekar en orð sín.

Við sömdum um kaupverð eftir að hann hafði prúttað um verð sem nam EUR 130.000 sem hann sagðist ætla að staðgreiða með millifærslu þegar við værum komnir til Íslands en jafnframt var samið um að hann myndi greiða EUR 5.000 við undirritun á löglegum kaupsamningi. Alexander sagði að það væri ekkert mál, hann myndi koma persónulega með þessar EUR 5.000 upp á hótel til okkar eftir kvöldmat. Við fórum á hótelið og biðum allt kvöldið eftir honum en hann kom aldrei og hafði ekkert samband við okkur.

Þegar við vorum komnir aftur heim, sendum við honum reikningsnúmer til þess að hann gæti greitt þessar litlu EUR 5.000 en hann sagðist aldrei eiga nokkurn pening til þess að greiða þetta smáræði. Það voru sendir tölvupóstar og símtöl og skilaboð um þessar EUR 5.000 og alltaf kom ný og ný lygasaga í um hálft ár frá Alexander og þetta var farið að minna mann á Nígeríusvindl eins og maður les um á netinu. Kaupsamningurinn sem hann undirritaði persónulega EUR 130.000 var eitthvað sem hann var ekki maður til að standa við og hann olli okkur stórum skaða vegna þess að við gátum leigt skipið fyrir EUR 10.000 á mánuði en vegna þess að við vorum með bindandi kaupsamning við Alexander Von Ripp, gátum við ekki leigt það til þriðja aðila. Tjón okkar á að hafa kynnst þessum manni vegna fjársvika hans nemur EUR 80.000 og hann hefur gefið það út að hann sé enginn borunarmaður fyrir þeirri upphæð.

Okkur þykir því rétt að segja frá þessum sviksamlegu viðskiptum til þess að vara önnur hugsanleg fórnarlömb við að eiga viðskipti við Alexander Von Ripp.
